Do you think you could...?28/12/2019 My cousin has a labrador who was one of fourteen in a litter and the last to be sold. So he was a little lonely all by himself. So my cousin decided to get another puppy to keep him company.
She also has a daughter who, like most teenagers, was almost impossible to get a really good picture of. But then, one of those flukes happened. Possibly the excitement of a new puppy. My cousin got a really good picture of her daughter holding the puppy on her lap. One of those pictures that capture who that person is, just at that time. As she grows up, she'll never be quite that person again. So my cousin asked me if I would be able to draw it for her. Normally, I like to have a choice of pictures and pick the one I think would best suit my style. But this one was a really good picture. So agreed to draw it. A few weeks later I met up with my cousin and had the basic outlaine ready to show her. And I mean basic – you could just about see what the picture was of. The reaction when I showed it to her was unbelievable – she was speechless! Just wait until you see the finished thing... I have to say, though, my mom said she thought it was the best one I've drawn. I have to say I agree. I'm really pleased with how it turned out, and needless to say, so was my cousin!

Summer Holidays18/8/2018 In the summer of 2018 we went to stay with my husband's parents for our holiday. They normally live in Örebro in Sweden (being Swedish) but during the summer months they live in their holiday home on the island of Gotland, off the south-east coast of Sweden.
We had a really lovely time, with my in-laws taking us to various places around the island, especially those they thought my son would enjoy. He really enjoyed splashing around in the sea (yes, it was warm enough for that!) and on another day we went to a different beach and enjoyed throwing stones into the sea. To thank them for their hospitality, I wanted to do something really nice for them. Ideally, I wanted to draw a picture of my son but alas, I had left my drawing things at home. So one day I scoured the shops for some supplies! There was one picture I had taken whilst we were on the stony beach that had really drawn my artist's eye. It really seemed to capture the moment, and my son, beatifully. So, once I had found my supplies, I got drawing. I think my in-laws were really pleased with the gift! Father's Day12/7/2018 You know how sometimes you're looking for a gift for someone and you just stumble across something that says 'I saw this and thought of you'? This was the other way round.
I was looking for a card for my Dad for Father's Day (who'd have thought?) when I spotted a card and thought 'I saw this and it was made for me'. Sounds a bit arrogant, but this one really was. It was a Father's Day card, presumably meant for a child, but it had a big white area in the middle ideal for drawing a picture of your father. I had to get it. I then had to find a suitable picture, quickly, as Father's Day was, not surprisingly, on Sunday. I bought the card on Saturday. I scrolled through the pictures on my phone and found one which looked like it had been taken just for the card. Last October. I got to work and managed to complete the picture in three half-hour sessions. For someone who can't draw people, it seems faces aren't all that difficult. Note to self - greeting card card is not ideal to draw on. The dog11/7/2018 We got the sad news that my former neighbour of almost 30 years had passed away - of course we went to the funeral. At the wake following the funeral, I was chatting briefly to my neighbour's daughter and her husband. I showed her the pictures I had drawn of Joseph.
It turns out, the family dog had passed away, quite suddenly, the week before the funeral. The poor woman had that to deal with on top of every-thing else. Coincidentally, she had been looking for someone who would be able to do a pencil sketch of the dog to remember her by. And there I come with my sketches of Joseph... Naturally, I couldn't refuse to do the drawing. Another deadline approached where my parents were having dinner with the daughter and her husband. I wanted to give it to her then. It wasn't quite finished by the time my parents left for the dinner, so I finished it and followed on. Thus, I was able to see her reaction when I handed it over. She was so happy with it she brought a tear to my eye. The second one11/7/2018 So the picture of Joseph turned out better than I hoped. I'm actually really chuffed with it: who knew I could draw people?! So after the success of my mother's picture (her birthday was in September) it seemed a good idea to draw a picture of Joseph for each of my two sisters for their Christmas presents.
We were all over the place for Christmas so we had Christmas Day Part Two shortly after Christmas. This was a good thing for me as I didn't have a suitable picture of Joseph to draw. Until Christmas. That gave me a bit of a tight deadline! As I was drawing two I decided to draw on A5 paper, rather than A4. That didn't make them any quicker to draw though. So how did these ones turn out? Could I duplicate the success of the first drawing? Take a look at these... And so it begins...11/7/2018 I've always enjoyed drawing things; the problem I used to have was deciding what to draw. After years of not drawing anything, my mother's 70th birthday came along. We didn't have a lot of money but I wanted to give her some-thing really nice. The solution seemed to be to draw something for her and the only thing I could think of drawing was her grandson, Joseph. The problem with that is that I can't draw people! Or so I thought...
I decided to give it a try anyway - how bad could it be? How did it turn out? Well, Mom got some pretty special presents for that birthday but she has said her picture of Joseph was the best present. Judge for yourself - the original picture and the progression of the sketch are below... |
